If you are a doctor, nurse, health worker, counsellor, or work within the medical profession, you may have at least one patient who is disabled. You may treat her for issues related to her impairment, or others pertaining to her general health and wellbeing. Do you sometimes treat her differently because of her disability - for example because she cannot communicate easily or is in a wheelchair? Are you aware that she may have questions and concerns relating to sexuality, sex and reproduction? Many women with disabilities have questions relating to these areas, but they are often embarrassed or ashamed to ask. As a doctor, you can help ease her worries by giving her accurate and helpful information relating to her reproductive organs and sexual health. By not making assumptions about her sexuality and treating her like any other woman, you can help her to be safe and healthy - in all aspects of her life.
